Zayd bin Arqam used to say four takbirs over a funeral, but on one occasion he said five takbirs over a funeral. I asked him about it, and he replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say them."
كان زيد (بن أرقم) يكبر على جنازة أربعا، وإنه كبر على جنازة خمسا، فسألته فقال: كان رسول الله ﷺ يكبرها.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Funerals (957) through multiple routes from Shuba, from Amr bin Murra, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla, and he mentioned it. Ibn Abdul-Barr said, "This indicates that his takbir over the funeral was four times, and that he only said the takbir five times on one occasion, and this is not found from the Prophet ﷺ except through this route." Tirmidhi reported from Imam Ahmad and Ishaq, "If the imam says the takbir five times over the funeral, he should be followed." End.As for what was narrated from Kathir bin Abdullah, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the takbir five times, it is daif. Ibn Majah narrated it (1506) through the route of Ibrahim bin Ali Rafi, from Kathir bin Abdullah, from his father, from his grandfather. Ibrahim bin Ali Rafi was accused of lying by some, and regarding his teacher Kathir bin Abdullah, Shafii said, "He is a pillar among the pillars of lying."Likewise, what was narrated from Huzaifa, that he said the takbir five times over a funeral and then said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do this," is not sound. Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it (3/186) from Waki, from Jafar bin Ziyad, from Yahya bin Harith Taymi, a freedman of Huzaifa, from Huzaifa, and he mentioned it. Tahawi also narrated it in Sharh Maani (2755) through another similar route, but the chain contains someone whose reports are not relied upon, as Ibn Abdul-Barr said, and the quotation from him will follow shortly. The Views of Scholars on the Number of Takbirs over FuneralsBayhaqi (4/37) titled a chapter, "A chapter on what indicates that most of the companions agreed upon four, while some considered the extra takbirs abrogated." He then reported with his chain from Umar bin Khattab , who said, "All of that happened, four and five, but we came together upon four takbirs over the funeral."And from Abu Waail, who said, "They used to say the takbir seven, five, and six times during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or he said four. So Umar bin Khattab
gathered the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for him, and each man told him what he had seen, and Umar united them upon four takbirs, like the longest of prayers."Munziri said, "People have differed regarding the takbir over the funeral. It was said to be four takbirs, and this was narrated from Umar bin Khattab, his son Abdullah bin Umar, Zayd bin Thabit, Jabir bin Abdullah, Hasan bin Ali, his brother Muhammad bin Ali, Abu Hurairah, Bara bin Azib, Uqba bin Amir, Abdullah bin Abu Awfa, and Ata bin Abu Rabah. This is also the view of Malik, Shafii, Uzai, Abu Hanifa, Thawri and the people of Kufa, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Abu Thawr, and Dawud."Ibn Abdul-Barr Namari said, "This is the view of the majority of jurists, except that Abu Layla alone said five, and I do not know of any predecessor for him in this except Zayd bin Arqam, though there is disagreement reported from him about this, as well as Huzaifa and Abu Dharr, but the chains from both of them contain someone whose reports are not relied upon." This is the end of his words, meaning Ibn Abdul-Barr's.Then Munziri said, "Some scholars gave preference to the four takbirs because of the abundance of its narrators, the soundness of its chains, and the fact that it represents the later practice. Abu Bakr Siddiq led the prayer over the Prophet ﷺ and said the takbir four times, Umar led the prayer over Abu Bakr and said the takbir four times, Suhayb led the prayer over Umar and said the takbir four times, Hasan led the prayer over his father Ali and said the takbir four times, and Uthman led a funeral prayer and said the takbir four times. It was narrated that Ibn Umar said the takbir over Umar four times, but this is not sound, it was actually Suhayb."Ibn Sirin and Jabir bin Zayd said the takbir was said three times, and this was also narrated from Ibn Abbas. Ali bin Abu Talib used to say the takbir six times over the people of Badr, five times over the rest of the companions, and four times over the rest of the people. Bayhaqi narrated that Ali ﷺ led the funeral prayer over Abu Qatada Ansari and said the takbir seven times over him, since he had taken part in Badr. Bayhaqi said, "This is how it was narrated, but it is a mistake, because Abu Qatada remained alive a long time after Ali
." This is the end of Bayhaqi's words."Some held that Abu Qatada died in Madinah in the year fifty-four, and this supports what Bayhaqi said. Abu Umar Namari said, "The correct view is that he died in Kufa during the caliphate of Ali, and it was Ali who led the prayer over him," and this supports the first narration. And Allah knows best."Some scholars said, 'The earliest predecessors among the companions differed on this, ranging from three takbirs to nine.'" This is the end of Munziri's words. This quotation from Munziri refutes those who claimed a consensus on four takbirs. As for what was narrated from Ibn Abbas, who said, "The last funeral over which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the prayer, he said the takbir four times over it," Bayhaqi narrated it in Sunan al-Kubra (4/37) and said, "Nadr bin Abdul-Rahman Abu Umar Khazzaz narrated it alone, from Ikrima, and he is daif." This wording has also been narrated through other routes, all of which are daif.
