The Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah the Exalted says, "I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him whenever he remembers Me. If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a better gathering. If he draws near to Me by a hand's span, I draw near to him by an arm's length. If he draws near to Me by an arm's length, I draw near to him by a fathom. If he comes to Me walking, I come to him at a swift pace."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Tawhid (7405), and Muslim in the Book of Dhikr and Dua (2675), both from the hadith of Amash, who said, I heard Abu Salih narrate from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Muslim also narrated it from Muhammad bin Rafi, who said, Abdul-Razzaq narrated to us, who said, Mamar narrated to us, from Hammam bin Munabbih, who said, this is what Abu Hurairah narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah. He then mentioned several hadiths, among them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah said, 'If My servant draws near to Me a hand-span, I draw near to him a forearm's length, and if he draws near to Me a forearm's length, I draw near to him a fathom, and if he comes to Me walking, I come to him more quickly.'"Dhahabi said in Uluww (1/474), after mentioning the hadith, "This is a sahih hadith. It distinguishes between inner speech and audible speech, for He, exalted is He, speaks in both ways. He is the One who spoke to Moses directly, called out to him from the side of the mountain, and drew him near in intimate conversation."
