The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a riding animal while he was accompanying a funeral procession, but he refused to ride it. When he departed, a riding animal was brought to him and he mounted it. He was asked about this, and he said, "The angels were walking, so I would not ride while they were on foot. When they left, I rode."
أن رسول الله ﷺ أتي بدابة وهو مع الجنازة فأبى أن يركبها، فلما انصرف أتي بدابة فركب، فقيل له: فقال: إن الملائكة كانت تمشي فلم أكن لأركب وهم يمشون، فلما ذهبوا ركبت.
Abu Dawud (3177) narrated it from Yahya bin Musa Balkhi, who said, Abdul-Razzaq told us, Maamar told us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, from Thawban, who said, and then he mentioned the hadith.Hakim also narrated it (1/355) and said, "Sahih according to the criterion of the two sheikhs." Shawkani said in Nil: "The men of its chain are the men of sahih hadith."As for what is reported from him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw some people riding their mounts in a funeral procession and said, "Do you not feel ashamed that the angels walk on their feet while you ride?" this is daif. It was narrated by Tirmidhi (1012) and Ibn Majah (1480), both through the route of Abu Bakr bin Abu Maryam, from Rashid bin Saad, from Thawban, who mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Thawban has also been reported from him as a stopped report (mawquf), and Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, said, its stopped version is more sahih."I say, in it is Abu Bakr bin Abu Maryam, who is Abu Bakr bin Abdullah bin Abu Maryam Ghassani, sometimes attributed to his grandfather, and he is daif. He was declared daif by Abu Dawud, Ahmad, Abu Hatim, Nasai, Daraqutni, and others.
