Abu Musa left instructions when death approached him, saying, "When you carry my funeral bier, walk briskly. Do not follow me with a censer of incense. Do not place anything in my grave niche that would come between me and the earth. Do not erect any structure over my grave. And I call you to witness that I disown every woman who shaves her head, raises her voice in wailing, or tears her clothing in grief."They asked, "Have you heard something concerning this?"He replied, "Yes, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (19547) from Mutamir bin Sulayman Taymi, who said, "I read to Fudayl bin Maysara, in the hadith of Abu Hurayz, that Abu Burda told him, he said, 'Abu Musa gave his final instructions...'" and he mentioned it. Ibn Majah also narrated it (1487), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3150), via Mutamir bin Sulayman, except that Ibn Majah mentioned it in an abridged form.Busiri said in Misbah Zujaja, "This isnad is hasan. Abu Hurayz's name is Abdullah bin Husayn, and there is disagreement about him." I say, it is as he said, and this was mentioned previously in the chapter on the Prophet's ﷺ disavowal of the wailing woman. As for what was narrated from Abu Hurairah, "The funeral procession should not be followed with a raised voice or fire," its isnad contains someone unnamed. Abu Dawud narrated it (3171) from Harun bin Abdullah, "Abdul-Samad narrated to us." Also, "Ibn Muthanna narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us." Both said, "Harb, meaning Ibn Shaddad, narrated to us, Yahya narrated to us, Bab bin Umayr narrated to me, a man from the people of Madinah narrated to me, from his father, from Abu Hurairah," and he mentioned it.Likewise, what was narrated from Jabir, from the Prophet ﷺ, "that he forbade the deceased to be followed with a voice or fire," is not sahih. Haythami said in Majma (29/3), "Abu Yaala narrated it, and it contains someone who is not otherwise mentioned."Likewise, what was narrated from Ibn Umar, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade that a funeral procession be followed by a wailing sound," is not sahih. Ibn Majah narrated it (1583), and it contains Abu Yahya Qattat, who is daif. Ibn Jawzi included it in Mawduat, and Busiri pointed to this same defect in Misbah Zujaja, saying, "Abu Yaala Mawsili narrated it in his Musnad via Layth bin Abu Salim, from Mujahid," and he mentioned it. Layth bin Abu Salim is daif.In summary, if we look at all these hadiths together, it appears that they have a basis, and it is established in sahih reports that a number of companions gave instructions to this effect. Amr bin As gave such instructions, as in Sahih Muslim (121), where he said, "When I die, no wailing woman or fire should accompany me."
