The Prophet ﷺ, in a long hadith, said that the Lord will appear to them and ask, "What is the matter with you? Why do you not go forth as the others have gone forth?"They will reply, "We have a Lord whom we have not yet seen."He will ask, "By what sign would you recognize your Lord if you saw Him?"They will say, "There is a sign between us and Him. If we see it, we will know Him."He will ask, "And what is it?"They will answer, "He will uncover His shin."At that moment, He will uncover a shin, and every believer who used to prostrate willingly will fall down in prostration. But there will remain a people whose backs are like the horns of cattle. They will try to prostrate but will not be able to.In another narration, "Allah will uncover His shin."
Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir (9/416-421) from Ali bin Abdul-Aziz, who said, Abu Ghassan narrated to us, who said, Abdul-Salam bin Harb narrated to us, from Abu Khalid Dalani, from Minhal bin Amr, from Abu Ubayda, from Masruq, from Abdullah bin Masud, and he mentioned it as part of a long hadith. Its chain of transmission is hasan, on account of some criticism directed at Abu Khalid Dalani, though he is hasan in his hadith. See its detailed sourcing in the chapter on the believers seeing their Lord on the Day of Resurrection. Bayhaqi referred to this marfu hadith of Ibn Masud in al-Asma wal-Sifat (2/182).The second narration is found in Abdullah bin Ahmad's al-Sunnah (1203). His words, "the horns of cattle," mean their horns.Ibn Manda said in Radd Ali Jahmiya (p. 36), after citing the hadith of Abu Saeed Khudri, "This is a hadith firmly established by the agreement of Bukhari and Muslim bin Hajjaj."The companions differed regarding the meaning of His words , "On the Day when the shin will be uncovered" [Qalam 68:42]. It was narrated from Ibn Masud something that corresponds to the marfu report, through Abdul-Razzaq, from Thawri, from Maslama bin Kuhayl, from Abu Zaraa, from Ibn Masud, regarding His words
, "On the Day when the shin will be uncovered" [Qalam 68:42], that he said, "About His two shins."Ibn Manda said, "This is how Ibn Masud recited it, yukshafu, with a fatha on the ya and a kasra on the shin. And it is also narrated from him, regarding His words, "On the Day when the shin will be uncovered" [Qalam 68:42], that he said, 'About His shin, so every believer will prostrate, while every disbeliever will stiffen and become like a single bone.'"Bayhaqi said in al-Asma wal-Sifat (2/182), "The narrations from Abdullah bin Abbas differ regarding the meaning of the Almighty's words, "On the Day when the shin will be uncovered" [Qalam 68:42]. Usama bin Zayd narrated from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, "On the Day when the shin will be uncovered" [Qalam 68:42], with the ya vowelled with damma."Yaqub Hadrami said, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, that he recited "On the Day when the shin will be uncovered" [Qalam 68:42] as "takshifu," with a fatha on the ta, meaning that the Resurrection will uncover a severe hardship. The Arabs say, "This matter has uncovered its shin," when it turns severe. This is drawn from the poet's line, "I uncovered my shin for them, and stark evil became apparent." Ibn Jareer Tabari mentioned this in his tafsir. See further the reports that Bayhaqi gathered in al-Asma wal-Sifat (2/183).I say, this interpretation from Ibn Abbas rests on the fact that the shin was not attributed to Allah
in the noble verse, and so he explained it according to the speech of the Arabs. It cannot therefore be said that he was the first to deny the attribute of the shin. Sheikh Islam bin Taymiya, may Allah have mercy on him, points to this in his words,"There is no doubt that the apparent meaning of the Quran does not indicate that this is among the attributes, for He said, 'On the Day when the shin will be uncovered,' in the indefinite form of affirmation, without attributing it to Allah, and He did not say 'about His shin.' So, in the absence of definiteness through attribution, it is not apparent that it is among the attributes except by another proof. This is not tawil, for tawil is turning the verse away from its established meaning, its sense, and its known signification."I say, had Ibn Abbas come across the hadith of Abu Saeed Khudri, in which the attribution of the shin to Allah
is made explicit, he would have affirmed it, as is known of the practice of the early generations in adhering to the explicit text.As for what is narrated from Abu Musa in marfu form regarding "On the Day when the shin will be uncovered" [Qalam 68:42], that he said, "About a great light before which they fall in prostration," this is very daif. Abu Yaala narrated it (7246) from Qasim bin Yahya, who said, Walid bin Muslim narrated to us, who said, Abu Saeed, Rawh bin Jinah, narrated to us, from a freedman of Umar bin Abdul-Aziz, from Abu Burda, from his father, from the Prophet, and he mentioned it.Bayhaqi also narrated it in al-Asma wal-Sifat (752) through Walid bin Muslim, and said, "Rawh bin Jinah is a Syrian who brings munkar hadiths that are not corroborated, and the freedmen of Umar bin Abdul-Aziz are numerous."I say, the freedman of Umar bin Abdul-Aziz is unidentified and unnamed, and as noted, they are numerous. Hafiz also declared it daif in Fath al-Bari (8/664).
