The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever attends a funeral until the prayer is performed has earned one qirat, and whoever stays until the burial has earned two qirats."Someone asked, "What are the two qirats?"He replied, "Like two enormous mountains."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من شهد الجنازة حتى يصلي عليها فله قيراط، ومن شهدها حتى تدفن فله قيراطان. قيل: وما القيراطان؟ قال: مثل الجبلين العظيمين.
Bukhari narrated it in Funerals (1325), and Muslim in Funerals (945), both from the hadith of Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Hurmuz al-Araj told me that Abu Hurairah said, and he related the hadith, and the wording of both is the same. In a narration from Muslim through another route, "The smallest of it is like Uhud." In another narration of his, from Abu Hazim, who said, I said, "O Abu Hurairah, what is a qirat?" He said, "Like Uhud."It will come later in the hadith of Thawban that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the qirat, and he said, "Like Uhud." This makes clear that the speaker was the Prophet ﷺ himself, and that the statement is a marfu report.Ibn Shihab said, Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar said, Ibn Umar used to pray over the funeral and then leave. But when the hadith of Abu Hurairah reached him, he said, "We have missed out on many qirats."
