The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand for a funeral procession, but later he sat.In another narration, Waqid bin Amr bin Saad bin Muaz said, Nafi bin Jubayr saw me standing while we were at a funeral, and he was sitting waiting for the bier to be set down. He said to me, "What makes you stand?"I replied, "I am waiting for the bier to be set down, because of what Abu Saeed Khudri reported."Nafi said, "Masud bin Hakam told me, on the authority of Ali bin Abu Talib, that he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand, then he sat.'"
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يقوم في الجنازة، ثم جلس، بعد. وفي رواية: عن واقد بن عمرو بن سعد بن معاذ أنه قال: رآني نافع بن جبير، ونحن في جنازة قائما، وقد جلس ينتظر أن توضع الجنازة، فقال لي: ما يقيمك؟ فقلت: أنتظر أن توضع الجنازة لما يحدث أبو سعيد الخدري، فقال نافع: فإن مسعود بن الحكم حدثني عن علي بن أبي طالب أنه قال: قام رسول الله ﷺ ثم قعد.
Malik narrated it in Kitab al-Janaiz (33), from Yahya bin Saeed, from Waqid bin Amr bin Saad bin Muaz, from Nafi bin Jubayr bin Mutim, from Masud bin Hakam, from Ali bin Abu Talib, and he mentioned it.The second narration is found in Muslim, in Kitab al-Janaiz (962), through multiple routes from Layth bin Saad, from Yahya bin Saeed, from Waqid bin Amr, and he mentioned it. He also narrated it through another route, from Shubah, from Muhammad bin Munkadir, who said, I heard Masud bin Hakam narrating from Ali, who said, "We saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stand, so we stood, and he sat, so we sat," meaning in connection with the funeral.In a narration recorded by Tahawi in his commentary (1/282), it states, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered us to stand for the funeral, then afterward he sat and ordered us to sit."In another narration also recorded by him, through the route of Ismail bin Masud bin Hakam Zurqi, from his father, who said, "I attended a funeral in Iraq, and I saw men standing, waiting for the bier to be set down. I saw Ali bin Abu Talib gesturing to them to sit, saying, 'The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to sit after standing.'" Its chain is hasan on account of Ismail bin Masud, who is "truthful."Nasai narrated it (1923) through another route, from Abu Muamar, who said, We were with Ali when a funeral passed by, and the people stood for it. Ali said, "What is this?" They said, "It is what Abu Musa commanded." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only stood for the funeral of a Jewish woman, and he did not do so again after that." Its chain is sahih.
