A funeral procession of a Jewish man passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he stood up.Someone said to him, "Messenger of Allah, it is the funeral of a Jew."He replied, "Death is indeed a terrifying thing."
أن رسول الله ﷺ مرت به جنازة يهودي، فقام، فقيل له: يا رسول الله! إنها جنازة يهودي! فقال: إن للموت فزعا.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (8527) from Affan, [who said], Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.He also narrated it (7860), and Ibn Majah (1543), both from another route from Muhammad bin Amr with the same wording, but they did not mention that the funeral was for a Jew. They only mentioned his saying, "Death indeed brings a terror." Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Amr, for his hadith is hasan.Haythami mentioned it in Majma (27/3) and graded its chain hasan, though it does not meet his stated criterion, unless he considered that the detail specifying the funeral as being for a Jew, which Ibn Majah did not mention, accounts for that.
