A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ with a woven cloak that had its border still attached. Do you know what a burdah is? The people said, "It is a shawl."He said, "Yes."She said, "I wove this with my own hands and have come to clothe you with it."The Prophet ﷺ took it, as he was in need of it, and came out to us wearing it as his lower garment. So-and-so admired it and said, "Give it to me to wear, how beautiful it is."The people said, "You did not do well. The Prophet ﷺ put it on while he was in need of it, then you asked him for it, knowing that he never refuses anyone."He said, "By Allah, I did not ask him for it to wear it. I only asked him for it so that it would be my burial shroud."Sahl said, "And it became his shroud."
أن امرأة جاءت النبي ﷺ ببردة منسوجة فيها حاشيتها، أتدرون ما البردة؟ قالوا: الشملة، قال: نعم، قالت: نسجتها بيدي فجئت لأكسوكها، فأخذها النبي ﷺ محتاجا إليها، فخرج إلينا وإنها إزاره فحسنها فلان فقال: اكسنيها ما أحسنها، قال القوم: ما أحسنت، لبسها النبي ﷺ محتاجا إليها، ثم سألته وعلمت أنه لا يرد، قال: إني والله ما سألتها لألبسها، إنما سألته لتكون كفني. قال سهل: فكانت كفنه.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1277) from Abdullah bin Maslama, who said, Ibn Abu Hazim narrated to us, from his father, from Sahl, and he mentioned it.His saying "its edge" means its border, or that it was new and had not been cut from another garment. As for his saying "so-and-so," it is said to be Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, and it is also said to be a Bedouin man whose name is not known.
