The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you takes charge of burying his brother, let him prepare a good shroud for him."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: إذا ولي أحدكم أخاه فليحسن كفنه.
Tirmidhi (995) and Ibn Majah (1474) both narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Umar bin Yunus narrated to us, who said, Ikrima bin Ammar narrated to us, from Hisham bin Hassan, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu Qatada, and he mentioned the hadith. Tirmidhi said, "A hasan hadith." I say, it is as he said, for Ikrima bin Ammar, who is Ajli, is a disputed narrator. He was declared trustworthy by Abu Dawud, Ajli, Daraqutni, and others, while Imam Ahmad, Ibn Madini, Bukhari, and others criticized him. However, his hadith is hasan apart from his narration from Yahya bin Abu Kathir. Hafiz alluded to this in Taqrib, saying, "Truthful but prone to error, and there is confusion in his narration from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, and he had no written book."As for what was narrated from Ali bin Abu Talib, who said, "Do not be extravagant with me regarding a shroud, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Do not be extravagant with shrouds, for they are quickly stripped away from the deceased,'" this contains Amr bin Hashim Abu Malik Junbi. Abu Dawud (3154) narrated it through his route, from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Amir, from Ali bin Abu Talib, and he mentioned it. Munziri said, "It contains Amr bin Hashim Abu Malik Junbi, and there is criticism of him." I say, it is as he said, for the major critics criticized him, among them Bukhari, Muslim, Nasai, and Abu Ahmad Hakim, while Ibn Hibban was excessive in his criticism of him. Hafiz concluded by saying he was "weak in hadith."There is disagreement about whether Amir, who is Shaybi, actually heard from Ali. The sound view is that he did hear from him, as is established in Sahih Bukhari, and he does not merely rely on the mere possibility of their having met. See Jami Tahsil (p. 204).
