Umm Ala, a woman from among them who had pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ, reported that when the Ansar drew lots to determine which of the Muhajirun would lodge with them, Uthman bin Mazun fell to their share.Umm Ala said, "Uthman bin Mazun stayed with us. He fell ill, so we nursed him until he died, and we wrapped him in his garments. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to us, and I said, 'May Allah's mercy be upon you, Abu Saaib. I bear witness for you that Allah has honored you.'"The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "And how do you know that Allah has honored him?"I replied, "I do not know, may my father and mother be your ransom, Messenger of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for Uthman, by Allah, the certainty has come to him, and I do hope good for him. By Allah, even though I am the Messenger of Allah, I do not know what will be done with him."She said, "By Allah, I will never declare anyone pure after this," and it grieved me.She continued, "Then I slept and saw in a dream a flowing spring for Uthman. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, and he said, 'That is his deeds. As for him, the certainty has come to him, and by Allah, I do hope good for him. By Allah, even though I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I do not know what will be done with me.'"She said, "By Allah, I will never declare anyone pure after this."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Testimonies (2687), Abu Yaman narrated to us, Shuayb informed us, from Zuhri, who said, Kharija bin Zayd Ansari narrated to me, and he mentioned it.Bukhari also narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1243) through the hadith of Aqeel, from Ibn Shihab with the same chain, and in it, "By Allah, I do not know, though I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what will be done with me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this in agreement with the words of Allah Most High, "Say, I am not something new among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you" [Ahqaf 46:9]. This was before the revelation of His words, "That Allah may forgive you your past and future sins" [Surah Fath 48:2], since Ahqaf is a Makkan surah while Surah Fath is a Madinan surah without any disagreement about that. It has been established that the Prophet ﷺ said, "I will be the first to enter Paradise," along with other hadiths that are explicit in this same meaning.Fath al-Bari (3/115–116).
