When Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, passed away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept. The one offering condolences, either Abu Bakr or Umar, said to him, "You are the most deserving of all people to honor the right of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, but we say nothing that angers the Lord. Were it not that this is a true promise, an appointed gathering, and that the last to go follows the first, we would grieve for you, Ibrahim, far more than we do. Indeed, we are saddened by your loss."
لما توفي ابن رسول الله ﷺ إبراهيم بكى رسول الله ﷺ، فقال له المعزي- إما أبو بكر، وإما عمر- أنت أحق من عظم الله حقه قال رسول الله ﷺ: تدمع العين ويحزن القلب، ولا نقول ما يسخط الرب، لولا أنه وعد صادق موعود جامع، وأن الآخرة تابع للأمل، لوجدنا عليك يا إبراهيم أفضل مما وجدنا، وإنا بك لمحزونون.
Ibn Majah (1589) reported it, he said, Suwayd bin Saeed narrated to us, he said, Yahya bin Sulaym narrated to us, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Asma bint Yazid, and he mentioned it.Ibn Saad also reported it in Tabaqat (1/143) through another route from Ibn Khuthaym, similarly. Its chain is hasan, due to the discussion surrounding Shahr bin Hawshab, though his hadith is hasan when it does not contradict others. Busiri also graded it hasan.
