Urwa bin Zubayr reported,

It was mentioned in Ayesha's presence that Ibn Umar had traced back to the Prophet ﷺ the statement that the dead person is punished in his grave because of the weeping of his family. She said, "What the Messenger of Allah ﷺ actually said was, 'He is indeed being punished for his own error and his own sin, while his family are weeping over him right now.'"She continued, "That is just like his statement, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood over the well in which lay the slain polytheists of Badr and said to them what he said, and it was reported as, 'They can hear what I am saying.' What he really said was, 'They now know that what I used to tell them was the truth.'"Then she recited, "You cannot make the dead hear" [Naml 27:80], and "Nor can you make those in the graves hear" [Fatir 35:22], meaning, once they had taken their places in the Fire.
