Abu Musa gave instructions when death approached him, saying, "When you carry my funeral bier, walk swiftly. Do not follow me with incense, do not place anything in my grave that comes between me and the earth, and do not erect any structure over my grave. I call you to witness that I disown every woman who shaves her head in mourning, raises her voice in wailing, or tears her clothes in grief."They asked, "Have you heard something about this?"He replied, "Yes, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
أوصى أبو موسى حين حضره الموت فقال: إذا انطلقتم بجنازتي فأسرعوا المشي، ولا تتبعني بمجمر، ولا تجعلوا في لحدي شيئا يحول بيني وبين التراب، ولا تجعلوا على قبري بناء، وأشهدكم أني بريء من كل حالقة، أو سالقة، أو خارقة، قالوا: أو سمعت فيه شيئا؟ قال: نعم من رسول الله ﷺ.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (19547) from Mutamir bin Sulayman Taymi, who said, "I read to Fudayl bin Maysara, in the hadith of Abu Hurayz, that Abu Burda told him, saying, 'Abu Musa gave his final instructions,'" and he related it.Ibn Majah narrated it (1487), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3150), via Mutamir bin Sulayman, except that Ibn Majah related it in abridged form. Busiri said in Misbah Zujaja, "This is a hasan chain of transmission. Abu Hurayz's name is Abdullah bin Husayn, and he is disputed."I say, it is as he said, for Abdullah bin Husayn Azdi, the judge of Sijistan, was graded daif by Yahya bin Saeed Qattan, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Abu Dawud, and others, while Abu Zura graded him trustworthy. Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is hasan, it is not objectionable, and his hadith may be recorded." Ibn Main's view of him varied, grading him trustworthy at one time and daif at another. Someone in this position, his hadith is graded hasan so long as there is nothing objectionable in it.As for what was narrated from Yazid bin Aws, who said, "I went in to see Abu Musa while he was gravely ill. His wife started to weep, or was about to, so Abu Musa said to her, 'Did you not hear what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said?' She said, 'Yes.' Then she fell silent. When Abu Musa died, I met the woman and said to her, 'What did Abu Musa mean when he said to you, "Did you not hear what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said?" and then fell silent?' She said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He is not one of us who shaves his head, wails loudly, or tears his clothes."'"In this hadith is Yazid bin Aws, whom no one has graded as trustworthy. Ibn Hibban only mentioned him in Thiqat (5/540), and this is why Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated, but since he was not corroborated in this instance, his hadith is weak.Abu Dawud narrated it (3130), and Nasai (1866), both from the hadith of Mansur, from Ibrahim, from Yazid bin Aws, who related it. Thus Yazid bin Aws made this hadith part of both the Musnad of Abu Musa and the Musnad of his wife together.
