We used to consider gathering at the family of the deceased and preparing food for them as part of wailing.
كنا نرى الاجتماع إلى أهل الميت، وصنعة الطعام من النياحة.
Ibn Majah (1612) and Ahmad (6905) both narrated it from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Qays bin Abu Hazim, from Jareer bin Abdullah Bajali, who said, and then he mentioned it. Its isnad is sahih. His saying, "We used to consider gathering," means during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, or during the time of the companions.
