The Prophet ﷺ said, "Zayd took the banner and was struck down, then Jafar took it and was struck down, then Abdullah bin Rawaha took it and was struck down," and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were shedding tears as he spoke. He continued, "Then Khalid bin Walid took up the banner without being appointed, and Allah granted victory through him."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1246) from Abu Muamar, who said, Abdul-Warith narrated to us, who said, Ayub narrated to us, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Anas, and he mentioned it.Bukhari gave it the chapter heading, "A man announcing a death to the deceased's family in person." Hafiz said, "The benefit of this chapter heading is to indicate that announcing a death is not entirely forbidden. What was prohibited was what the people of the pre-Islamic era used to do, for they would send someone to proclaim the news of a person's death at the doors of houses and in the marketplaces."
