The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not wish for death, for the terror of what awaits at the moment of departure is severe. Part of true happiness is that a servant be granted a long life and that Allah grant him the grace to turn to Him in repentance."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: لا تمنوا الموت، فإن هول المطلع شديد، وإن من السعادة أن يطول عمر العبد، ويرزقه الله الإنابة.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (14564), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (3240, 3422), both through the route of Abu Amir Aqadi (who is Abdul-Malik bin Amr Aqdi), who said, "Kathir bin Zayd narrated to us, Harith bin Yazid narrated to me, he said, 'I heard Jabir bin Abdullah,'" and he then mentioned the hadith. Its isnad is hasan because of Harith bin Yazid, who is among the narrators listed in Tajil (166). Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy and said, "Muhammad bin Yahya Madani and Kathir bin Zayd narrated from him."Munziri mentioned it in Targheeb (4/257), attributing it to Ahmad, and graded its isnad hasan. Hakim also narrated it through this same route in Mustadrak (4/240) and remained silent about it.As for what has been narrated from Umm Fadl, that the Prophet ﷺ visited Abbas while he was complaining of illness, and he wished for death, so the Prophet said, "O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, do not wish for death. If you are doing good, then adding more good to your good deeds is better for you, and if you are doing wrong, then being given more time to seek forgiveness is better for you, so do not wish for death."Yunus said, "And if you are doing wrong, then being given more time to seek forgiveness for your wrongdoing is better for you."Imam Ahmad narrated it (26874), and Abu Yaala (7076), and Tabarani (44), all through the route of Yazid bin Had, from Hind bint Harith, from Umm Fadl, and he mentioned it.Hind bint Harith is the Khathamiya, the wife of Abdullah bin Shaddad bin Had. She narrated from Umm Fadl Lubabah bint Harith two hadiths, one of them being this one. No one but Ibn Hibban deemed her reliable, and that is why Hafiz described her as "acceptable," meaning when her narration is corroborated, but it was not corroborated, so she is unknown and her hadith is weak.Hakim narrated it (1/339) and said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs," and likewise Munziri mentioned it in Targheeb wa Tarheeb (4/256) and said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs."That is because both of them assumed that Hind bint Harith is Firasiya, with a kasrah on the fa, also called Quryashiya, for she is a trustworthy narrator among the men of Bukhari. But the correct view, as I have said, is that she is the Khathamiya. And Allah, the Most High, knows best.
