Umar passed by Talha after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked, "Why do I see you so downcast? Has your cousin's rule troubled you?"Talha replied, "No, but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'I know a word which no one says at the moment of his death except that it becomes a light for his record, and his body and soul find comfort in it at the time of death.' But I did not ask him about it before he passed away."Umar said, "I know it. It is the one he wanted his uncle to say. Had he known of anything more saving for him than it, he would have commanded him to say it."
مر عمر بطلحة بعد وفاة رسول الله ﷺ فقال: ما لك كئيبا؟ أساءتك إمرة ابن عمك؟ قال: لا، ولكن سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: إني لأعلم كلمة لا يقولها أحد عند موته إلا كانت نورا لصحيفته، وإن جسده وروحه ليجدان لها روحا عند الموت فلم أسأله حتى توفى. قال: أنا أعلمها، هي التي أراد عمه عليها، ولو علم أن شيئا أنجي له منها لأمره.
Ibn Majah (3795) narrated it from Harun bin Ishaq Hamadani, who said, Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhab told us, from Masaar, from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Shaybi, from Yahya bin Talha, who said, then he mentioned it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (205) and narrated it through the route of Harun bin Ishaq, except that there was disagreement regarding Shaybi, who is Amir. Busiri said in Misbah Zujaja, "It was reported from him this way, and it was reported from him, from Ibn Talha, from his father, and it was reported, from him, from Yahya bin Talha, from his father, and it was reported, from him, from Yahya bin Talha, from his mother Sada, from Talha, and it was reported from him, from Talha, as a mursal report. Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba narrated it in his Musnad through the route of Mujalid, from Shaybi, from Jabir, from Talha." End of quote.I say, whatever part of it is sahih is not undermined by this disagreement. Among the sahih routes is what Imam Ahmad narrated (1384), and Abu Yaala (655), and Hakim (1/350–351), all of them through routes from Mutarrif bin Tareef Harithi, from Shaybi, from Yahya bin Talha bin Ubaydullah, from his father, that Umar saw him looking downcast, then he mentioned it. In it, the phrase is, "There is no god but Allah," and Talha said, "By Allah, that is it." Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs." But Yahya bin Talha bin Ubaydullah is not among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, rather he is among the narrators of the Sunan, though he is trustworthy.
