When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, whenever any of us was on the verge of death, we would inform him, and he would come before the person died, sit with him, pray for his forgiveness, and wait for his death.Sometimes this kept him for a long time and became difficult for him. So we said, "It would be more considerate to the Messenger of Allah not to inform him of someone dying until they have actually died."So when one of us died, we would inform him, and he would come to the family, pray for forgiveness for the deceased, and perform the funeral prayer over him. If he then chose to remain for the burial, he would wait for it, and if he chose to leave, he would leave. We continued in this way for another period. Then we said, "It would be more considerate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if we carried our dead to his house, so as not to make him go out or trouble him."So we did that, and that became the practice.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (11628) from Yunus, who said, Fulayh narrated to us, from Saeed bin Ubayd bin Sibaq, from Abu Saeed Khudri, and he mentioned it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3006), as did Hakim (1/357), both through the route of Fulayh. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs."I say, its chain is hasan due to what has been said about Fulayh bin Sulayman Abu Yahya Madani, who is "truthful but makes many mistakes," as stated in Taqrib. More than one of the imams has spoken about him, and the summary regarding him, as Ibn Adi said, is, He has sound hadiths. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (7/324), and the group of compilers included his narrations. For this reason, Haythami said in Majma (3/26), "Ahmad narrated it, and its men are trustworthy."
