A man from the Bedouins narrated to me, saying, "I brought goods to Madinah during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When I finished selling my merchandise, I said to myself, 'I must meet this man and hear from him directly.'"He continued, "He met me walking between Abu Bakr and Umar, so I followed behind them until they came upon a Jewish man who had spread out the Torah and was reading it. He was reciting it to console himself over a son of his who was dying. The young man was among the finest and most handsome of youths."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I adjure you by the One who revealed the Torah, do you find in your book a description of me and my coming?"The man shook his head, meaning, "No."But his son said, "Indeed, by the One who revealed the Torah, we do find in our book your description and your coming, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Move the Jews away from your brother." Then he himself took charge of shrouding him and preparing him, and prayed over him.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (23492) from Ismail (that is, Ibn Ulaya), from Jareeri, from Abu Sakhr Aqeeli, who said, then he related it.Its isnad is sahih. Jareeri is Saeed bin Iyas Jareeri Basri, who suffered a mixing of memory in his later years, but Ismail bin Ulaya narrated from him before this mixing occurred. Abu Sakhr Aqeeli's status as a Companion is disputed. Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Hibban and others counted him among the Companions, and Hafiz relied on this, mentioning him in the first section of Isabah.Haythami said in Majma (8/234), "Ahmad narrated it, and I do not know Abu Sakhr, but the rest of its narrators are the narrators of sahih works." So he said, even though Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his Thiqat (3/457), and this book of his is a primary reference for Haythami in authenticating narrators. The hadith has other routes, but the one I have mentioned is the most sahih of them. His saying, "He consoled himself with it concerning a son of his who was in the throes of death," means the son was approaching death, in the state of one at the point of dying. His saying, "He buried him," means he laid him in the grave. His saying, "Keep the Jews away from your brother," means, keep the Jews from taking charge of his funeral, because he had died as a Muslim, so the Muslims have more right to bury him.
