A Jew passed by the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Jew, tell us something."He said, "What would you say, Abu Qasim, when Allah places the heavens on this, the earths on this, the water on this, the mountains on this, and the rest of creation on this?" Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Salt pointed first with his little finger, then continued one finger after another until he reached his thumb. So Allah revealed, "They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal" [Zumar 39:67].
Tirmidhi (3240) narrated it from Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman, Muhammad bin Salt informed us, Abu Kudayna narrated to us, from Ata bin Saaib, from Abu Duha, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.Imam Ahmad (2267, 2988) also narrated it, as did Ibn Abu Asim in Sunnah (545), Ibn Khuzayma in Kitab Tawhid (129), and Ibn Manda in Radd Ali Jahmiya (65), all of them through Abu Kudayna, whose name is Yahya bin Muhallab.Abdullah bin Ahmad narrated it in Sunnah (493) through Imran bin Uyayna, and Ibn Manda in Radd Ali Jahmiya (66) through Hammad bin Salama, both of them from Ata bin Saaib, from Abu Duha, except that Ibn Manda stopped it at Masruq, who did not meet the Prophet ﷺ.Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib sahih."I say, it is hasan only, because of the disagreement over Ata bin Saaib, whose memory became confused toward the end of his life. Hammad bin Salama heard from him early on, yet he related it in mursal form from Masruq. When this is combined with the version that connects the chain, it becomes clear that the hadith has a basis, and it serves as a corroborating witness for what preceded. This is why Ibn Khuzayma included it in Kitab Tawhid, as mentioned earlier.
