I fell seriously ill, and the Prophet ﷺ came to visit me along with Abu Bakr, both of them on foot. They found me unconscious, so the Prophet ﷺ performed his ablution and then poured the water from his ablution over me. I regained consciousness and saw the Prophet ﷺ before me.I asked, "Messenger of Allah, what should I do about my property? How should I dispose of my wealth?"He gave me no answer until the verse of inheritance was revealed.
مرضت مرضا، فأتاني النبي ﷺ يعودني وأبو بكر وهما ماشيان، فوجداني أغمي علي، فتوضأ النبي ﷺ ثم صب وضوءه علي، فأفقت فإذا النبي ﷺ فقلت: يا رسول الله، كيف أصنع في مالي؟ كيف أقضي في مالي؟ فلم يجبني بشيء حتى نزلت آية الميراث.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Sick (5651), and Muslim in the Book of Inheritance Shares (1616), both from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Muhammad bin Munkadir, who heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, then he related the hadith. In a version reported by Muslim, "concerning Banu Salama."
