The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is patient will have patience as his reward, and whoever despairs will have despair as his lot."
إن رسول الله ﷺ قال: إن الله إذا أحب قوما ابتلاهم، فمن صبر فله الصبر، ومن جزع فله الجزع.
Imam Ahmad reported it (23623, 23633, 23641) through several routes from Amr bin Abu Amr, from Asim bin Umar bin Qatada, from Mahmud bin Labeed, and he related it. Its isnad is hasan because of Amr bin Abu Amr, who is the freed slave of Muttalib, for there is disagreement about him, but his hadith is hasan, and the group of hadith collectors have all reported from him.Munziri mentioned it in Targhib (5116) and said, "Ahmad reported it, and its narrators are trustworthy, and Mahmud bin Labeed saw the Prophet ﷺ, though there is disagreement about whether he actually heard from him directly."I say, Mahmud bin Labeed was among the younger companions, and most of his narrations are from the companions, which is why Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy successors and said, "He narrates unconnected reports," then said, "I mentioned him among the companions because he had a sighting of the Prophet." Ibn Hajar favored the view that he was indeed a companion, so he mentioned him in the first section of Isaba, and said in Taqrib, "A minor companion, most of his narrations are from the companions, he died in the year ninety-six."
