Ibn Abbas said to me, "Shall I show you a woman from the people of Paradise?"I replied, "Yes."He said, "This black woman. She came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'I suffer from epileptic seizures, and my body becomes exposed during them. Pray to Allah for me.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'If you wish, you may endure it patiently and Paradise will be yours, or if you wish, I will pray to Allah to cure you.'She said, 'I will endure it patiently.' Then she added, 'But my body becomes exposed. Pray to Allah that I not be exposed.'So he prayed for her."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Sick (5652) and Muslim in the Book of Righteousness and Maintaining Ties of Kinship (2576), both through Imran Abu Bakr, who said, "Ata bin Abu Rabah told me," and he related it.Bukhari also recorded it through another route, saying, "Muhammad (that is, Ibn Salam) narrated to us, Makhlad informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said, 'Ata told me that he saw Umm Zafar, that tall, dark-skinned woman, clinging to the covering of the Kaaba.'"This is the sahih view, that this tall, dark-skinned Abyssinian woman was known by the kunya Umm Zafar. This is how the trustworthy narrators reported it from Ata. But Umar bin Qays narrated it from Ata and corrupted the name, saying "Umm Farie" instead. She said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'I am a woman who suffers from seizures that overpower my mind.' He said, 'Whatever you wish. If you wish, I will pray to Allah for you, and if you wish, you may bear it patiently, and Paradise will be assured for you.'" She said to him, "I will bear it patiently."Tabarani and Khatib both recorded it through his route. Hafiz said, "Its chain of transmission up to Umar bin Qays is also daif. He also erred, in addition to the corruption of the name, by making the hadith a narration of Ata from her, when in fact Ata narrated it from Ibn Abbas." End of quote. See Isabah (4/453).It is also said that her name was "Shuayra," a diminutive form, as recorded by Mustaghfiri, who narrated it through Ata Khurasani, from Ata bin Abu Rabah, from Ibn Abbas, who said to him, "Shall I show you a woman from the people of Paradise?" Then he showed me a large, yellowish Abyssinian woman. "This is Suayra Asadiyya," and then he related her story.Abu Musa recorded it through the route of Mustaghfiri, and also through the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Khuzayma, from Miqdam bin Dawud, from Ali bin Saeed, from Bishr bin Maymun, from Ata Khurasani, with the same wording. It contains further details.Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Khuzayma said, "I disclaim before Allah, the Exalted, any responsibility for this chain of transmission." See also Isabah (4/329).His statement, "on the covering of the Kaaba," means she was clinging to the drapes of the Kaaba. It is also said that she used to do this when she feared a seizure was coming upon her. This is stated explicitly in the narration of Bazzar.
