The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No affliction strikes the believer, even a thorn that pricks him, without a portion of his sins being reduced or expiated through it."The narrator was unsure which of the two words Urwa used.
قال رسول الله ﷺ: لا يصيب المؤمن إلاقص من مصيبة حتى الشوكة إلا قص بها، أو كفر بها من خطاياه. لا يدري أيهما قال عروة.
Malik narrated it in "the Eye" (6) from Yazid bin Khusayfa, from Urwa bin Zubayr, who said, I heard Ayesha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned something similar.Muslim narrated it in "Righteousness and Kinship Ties" (2572) from Abu Tahir, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, who said, Malik bin Anas informed me, with his chain of transmission, and he mentioned something similar.The two Shaykhs, Bukhari in "The Sick" (5640) and Muslim, both narrated it from the hadith of Ibn Shihab, from Urwa, with his chain of transmission, and in it, "Except that Allah expiates his sins through it, even the thorn that pricks him," without hesitation.
