The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon to us when Hasan and Husayn came forward, wearing two red shirts, stumbling and getting back up. He came down, picked them up, and ascended the pulpit with them. Then he said, "Allah has spoken truly, 'Your wealth and your children are only a trial' [Taghabun 64:15]. I saw these two and could not bear it." Then he resumed his sermon.
Reported by Abu Dawud (1109), Tirmidhi (3774), Nasai (1413), and Ibn Majah (3600) through routes from Husayn bin Waqid, who said, Abdullah bin Burayda informed me, saying, I heard my father say, then he related it. Its chain is hasan, because of Husayn bin Waqid, for he is hasan al-hadith.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith, we only know it from the hadith of Husayn bin Waqid."Ibn Khuzayma (1456), Ibn Hibban (6039), and Hakim (1/287) graded it sahih, reporting it through the route of Husayn bin Waqid. Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith, meeting the criterion of Muslim, and the two of them did not include it, and it is a foundational text regarding interrupting the sermon and coming down from the pulpit when there is a need."
