While Umar was delivering the Friday sermon, a man entered. Umar asked, "Why are you late for the prayer?"The man replied, "As soon as I heard the call, I performed ablution."Umar said, "Did you not hear the Prophet ﷺ say, 'When one of you goes to the Friday prayer, let him perform a full bath'?"
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Friday Prayer (882), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Friday Prayer (4/845), both through the route of Yahya bin Abu Kathir, who said, Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman told me, who said, Abu Hurairah told me, and then he related it. In Muslim's version, the one who entered was Uthman bin Affan. Umar said, "What is wrong with people that they delay after the call to prayer?" Uthman said, "O Commander of the Faithful, when I heard the call, I did nothing more than perform wudu, then I came." Umar said, "Only wudu as well! Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'When any of you comes to the Friday prayer, let him perform ghusl'?"
