Abdullah Ibn Umar said to me, "Did you hear your father narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the special hour of Friday?"I replied, "Yes, I heard him say, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "It is between the time the imam sits down and the time the prayer is completed."'"
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on Friday (853) through Ibn Wahb, from Makhrama bin Bukayr, from his father, from Abu Burda, as mentioned. On this subject there is also what was narrated from Saad bin Ubada, that a man from the Ansar came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Tell us about the day of Friday, what good is in it?" He said, "It has five qualities. In it Adam was created, in it Adam was sent down, in it Allah caused Adam to die, and in it there is an hour in which no servant asks Allah for anything except that He grants it to him, so long as he does not ask for something sinful or for severing family ties, and in it the Hour will occur. There is no angel close to Allah, no heaven, no earth, no mountains, and no stone, except that it fears the day of Friday."Imam Ahmad (22457) and Bazzar (3738) narrated it through Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, from Amr bin Shurahbil bin Saeed bin Saad bin Ubada, from his father, from his grandfather, from Saad bin Ubada, as mentioned. Amr bin Shurahbil and his father were only deemed reliable by Ibn Hibban, so they are acceptable when corroborated, but they were not corroborated in this hadith. As for Bazzar, he said, "We do not know this statement to be narrated from the Prophet ﷺ except through this route, and its chain of transmission is sound." Ibn Hajar said, "This is a hasan hadith, if Shurahbil heard from his grandfather Saad bin Ubada."The chain has another defect, which is that Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel contradicted himself in this chain, for he also narrated it, as found with Ibn Majah (1084) and Imam Ahmad (15548), from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid Ansari, from Abu Lubaba bin Abdul-Munzir, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Friday is the master of days, and the greatest of them in Allah's sight, and it is greater in Allah's sight than the day of Adha and the day of Fitr. It has five qualities. In it Allah created Adam, in it Allah sent Adam down to the earth, in it Allah caused Adam to die, and in it there is an hour in which no servant asks Allah for anything except that He gives it to him, so long as he does not ask for something forbidden, and in it the Hour will occur. There is no angel close to Allah, no heaven, no earth, no winds, no mountains, and no sea, except that they fear the day of Friday."So he contradicted the account both in its chain and its wording, and perhaps Ibn Hajar is referring to this in his statement, "He has weak memory, his hadith is suitable for corroboration, but when he narrates alone it may be deemed hasan, and when he contradicts others it is not accepted." Talkhis (2/108).Likewise, what was narrated from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, who said, Abu Hurairah used to tell us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "In Friday there is an hour that no Muslim encounters while in prayer, asking Allah for something in it, except that He gives it to him." Abu Hurairah said this, and he indicated its shortness with his hand.He said, "When Abu Hurairah died, I said, 'By Allah, if I went to Abu Saeed and asked him about this hour, he might have some knowledge of it.' So I went to him, and found him straightening palm branches. I said, 'Abu Saeed, what are these palm branches that I see you straightening?' He said, 'These are palm branches in which Allah has placed a blessing for us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved them and used them as walking sticks, so we would straighten them and bring them to him. He once saw spittle facing the qibla of the masjid, while he had in his hand a branch from among those palm branches, so he scraped it off and said, "When one of you is in his prayer, let him not spit in front of him, for his Lord is in front of him. Let him spit to his left, or under his foot, and if he cannot..."'"Siraj said, "If he cannot find a place to spit, then let him spit into his garment or his sandal."He said, "Then the sky grew stormy that night, and when the Prophet ﷺ went out for the night prayer, a flash of lightning struck, and he saw Qatada bin Numan. He said, 'What is the hurry, Qatada?' He said, 'I knew, Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that few would attend the prayer, so I wanted to attend it.' He said, 'When you have prayed, wait until I pass by you.' When he finished, he gave him the palm branch, and said, "Take this, it will light your way ten steps ahead of you and ten steps behind you. If you enter the house and see a black shape in a corner of the house, strike it before it speaks, for it is a devil."'"He said, "So he did that, and that is why we love these palm branches." He said, "I said, 'Abu Saeed, Abu Hurairah told us about the hour on Friday, do you have any knowledge of it?' He said, 'I asked the Prophet ﷺ about it, and he said, "I had indeed known it, but then I forgot it, just as I forgot Laylat al-Qadr."'"He said, "Then I left him and went to Abdullah bin Salam."Ahmad narrated it (11624) from Yunus and Shurayh, who said, Fulayh narrated to us, from Saeed bin Harith, from Abu Salama, as mentioned. Bazzar also narrated it (620, Kashf Astar) through another route from Fulayh, with the same wording. He added, after the statement "then I left him," the following, "until I came to the house of a man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ." He said, "I said, 'This is a man who has read the Torah and companied with the Prophet ﷺ.' So I went in to him and said, 'Tell me about this hour that the Prophet ﷺ used to speak of regarding Friday.' He said, 'Yes. Allah created Adam on Friday, settled him in Paradise on Friday, sent him down to the earth on Friday, and caused him to die on Friday, and it is the day on which the Hour will occur, and it is the last hour of Friday.'"He said, "I said, 'Do you not know that the Prophet ﷺ said, "in prayer"?' He said, 'And do you not know that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever waits for a prayer is in a state of prayer"?'"In its chain is Fulayh bin Sulayman, from whom the group narrated, but he was criticized regarding his memory. Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, Abu Dawud, Nasai, and Abu Zura Razi deemed him daif, while Daraqutni deemed him reliable in one report, and said in another, "They differ about him, but there is no harm in him." Ibn Adi said, "Fulayh has sound hadiths, and he narrates sound hadiths, and also some rare ones, from the rest of the sheikhs among the people of Madinah. Bukhari relied on him in his Sahih, and narrated much from him, and in my view there is no harm in him."I say, Fulayh alone narrated this hadith in this particular form, and he combined in it several hadiths, some of which have sahih and hasan routes elsewhere, and he was alone in this form with some of the wording, among them, "These palm branches, Allah has placed a blessing for us in them, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved them and used them as walking sticks," and, "I had indeed known it, then I forgot it." Ibn Khuzayma (1741) and Hakim (2790-280) deemed this latter wording sahih, through the route of Yunus bin Muhammad, from Fulayh, with the same wording. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs." I say, however the chain turns, it revolves around Fulayh, and the scholars' statements about him have already been mentioned.Likewise, what was narrated from Abu Salama, who said, "I heard Abu Hurairah and Abu Saeed both mention that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'In Friday there is an hour that no servant encounters while praying, asking Allah for something in it, except that He gives it to him.'" He said, "And Abdullah bin Salam mentioned it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'Yes, it is the last hour.'" I said, "But he said, 'while he is praying,' and that is not a time of prayer." He said, "Have you not heard, or has it not reached you, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever waits for the prayer is in a state of prayer'?" So he made the mention of "the last hour" part of what is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ as marfu.Bazzar narrated it (619, Kashf Astar) from Hasan bin Sabbah, from Abdullah bin Jafar, who said, Ubaydullah bin Amr narrated to us, from Mamar, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Salama, with the same wording. It appears that this is a mistake from some of its narrators, for its narrators are between reliable and truthful, but Bazzar's sheikh, and Abdullah bin Jafar, and likewise Ubaydullah bin Amr, each of them was described as having some degree of error, and this was only established as sahih as a statement of Abdullah bin Salam, as mentioned previously.Haythami said, "The hadith of Abu Hurairah is in the Sahih, and the hadith of Ibn Salam I have not seen as marfu with any of them." I say, what appears is that Abdullah bin Salam used to narrate it in two ways, sometimes as marfu, and other times as mawquf, as is indicated by the hadith that comes after the hadith of Jabir.
