We were commanded to go out on the day of Eid, so much so that we would bring out the virgin from her seclusion, and we would even bring out the menstruating women. They would stand behind the people, joining them in their takbir and supplications, hoping for the blessing and purity of that day.
Bukhari related it in the Chapter on the Two Eids (971), and Muslim in the Chapter on the Two Eids (11/890), both by way of Asim al-Ahwal, from Hafsa bint Sirin, from Umm Atiya, as mentioned. The wording is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is, "The menstruating women would go out and stand behind the people, reciting the takbir along with the people."
