The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go out on the day of Fitr and the day of Adha to the prayer ground. The first thing he would begin with was the prayer. Then he would turn and stand facing the people, while the people remained seated in their rows, and he would exhort them, advise them, and instruct them. If he wished to dispatch an expedition or order something, he would issue the command, and then he would depart.Abu Saeed said, "The people continued in that practice until I went out with Marwan, who was the governor of Madinah, on an Adha or Fitr day. When we reached the prayer ground, there was a pulpit that Kathir bin Salt had built, and Marwan intended to climb it before performing the prayer. So I tugged at his garment, but he pulled it away from me, ascended the pulpit, and delivered the sermon before the prayer."I said to him, "By Allah, you have changed it!"He replied, "Abu Saeed, what you know is gone."I said, "By Allah, what I know is better than what I do not know."He said, "The people no longer sit for us after the prayer, so I made it before the prayer."In another narration, he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go out on the day of Adha and the day of Fitr and begin with the prayer. When he had completed his prayer, he would stand and face the people while they remained seated in their place of prayer. If he had need to dispatch an expedition, he would mention it to the people, and if he had any other matter, he would instruct them concerning it. He used to say, 'Give in charity, give in charity, give in charity,' and the women were the most who gave. Then he would depart. The practice continued in this way until the time of Marwan bin Hakam. I went out accompanying Marwan until we reached the prayer ground, and there was Kathir bin Salt, who had built a pulpit of clay and bricks. Marwan was pulling his hand away from me as if drawing me toward the pulpit, while I was pulling him toward the prayer. When I saw that, I said, 'What about beginning with the prayer?'He said, 'No, Abu Saeed, what you know has been abandoned.'I said, 'Never! By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will not bring anything better than what I know,' three times. Then he departed."
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Two Eids (956) from Saeed bin Abu Maryam, who said, "Muhammad bin Jafar narrated to us," who said, "Zayd informed me, from Iyad bin Abdullah bin Abu Sarh, from Abu Saeed Khudri," and he mentioned it. This is the first narration. Muslim reported it in the Book of Two Eids (889) through another route, from Dawud bin Qays, from Iyad bin Abdullah, with the same wording. This is the second narration. His statement, "to the musalla," refers to a well-known location in Madinah. Between it and the door of the masjid was a thousand cubits, as Umar bin Shabba stated in Akhbar Madinah. This hadith provides evidence for the recommendation of going out to the open ground for the Eid prayer, and that this is more excellent than performing it in the masjid, because of the Prophet's ﷺ regular practice of doing so despite the excellence of his masjid, except in case of an excuse, in which case the prayer is performed in the masjid. It is reported from Abu Hurairah that rain once fell upon them, so the Prophet ﷺ led them in the Eid prayer inside the masjid. This was reported by Abu Dawud (1160) and Ibn Majah (1312), both through the route of Walid bin Muslim, who said, "Isa bin Abdul-Ala bin Abu Farwa narrated to us," who said, "I heard Abu Yahya Ubaydullah Taymi narrating from Abu Hurairah," and he mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is daif. Isa bin Abdul-Ala bin Abdullah bin Abu Farwa is unknown. Dhahabi said, "He is barely known." His teacher, Abu Yahya Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Mawhab, is also unknown. Ahmad said, "He is not known, and he has munkar reports."I say, the established practice based on this is that the prayer is performed in the masjids in cases of rain and fear. Likewise, it is also performed in the masjids when there is no Eid musalla in the city, or when the musalla is not sufficient to accommodate all the worshippers, except for Masjid al-Haram, since it has not been established that the people of Makkah used to go out to the open ground to perform the two Eid prayers.
