Umar took hold of a brocade cloak that was being sold in the market and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Messenger of Allah, buy this so you may adorn yourself with it on Eid and when receiving delegations."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "This is only the garment of one who has no share in the Hereafter."Umar remained as long as Allah willed him to remain. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him a silk cloak. Umar took it and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, you said, 'This is only the garment of one who has no share in the Hereafter,' yet you have sent me this cloak?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "You may sell it or use it to meet your needs."
Bukhari narrated it in "The Two Eids" (948) from Abu Yaman, who said, Shuayb informed us, from Zuhri, who said, Salim bin Abdullah informed me, from Abdullah bin Umar, and he related it.The hadith was also narrated by Malik in "Clothing" (18) from Nafi, from Abdullah, except that he said, "for Friday and for the delegations," instead of "for Eid and for the delegations," and he added at the end, "So Umar gave it to a polytheist brother of his in Makkah to wear."Bukhari also narrated it in "Friday" (886) from Abdullah bin Yusuf, and Muslim in "Clothing and Adornment" (2068) from Yahya bin Yahya, both of them from Malik, with the same wording. It will come with more detail in the book on Friday.Hafiz said, "The way this serves as evidence is that he ﷺ approved of Umar's basic practice of dressing up for Friday, and likewise for Eid, and limited his disapproval to wearing that particular garment because it was silk."As for what was narrated from Jabir, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear his red cloak on the two Eids and on Friday, its chain contains Hajjaj bin Artah, whose hadith is lenient due to his frequent errors and his tadlis.Ibn Khuzayma narrated it (1766), with the wording, "The Prophet ﷺ had a robe he used to wear on the two Eids and on Friday," and Bayhaqi (3/280) narrated it as well, both of them from Hajjaj bin Artah, from Abu Jafar, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related it.Likewise, what Shafii narrated from Ibrahim bin Muhammad, that Jafar bin Muhammad narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet ﷺ used to wear a striped Yemeni cloak on every Eid, is not sound. For it is daif, along with being a mursal narration, as Dhahabi said in Muhaddhab fi Ikhtisar Sunan al-Kubra (5455), and Nawawi also graded it daif in Khulasa (2890).
