Abu Dharr used to serve the Prophet ﷺ, and when he finished his service, he would retreat to the mosque, which served as his home where he slept. One night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in and found Abu Dharr stretched out in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ nudged him with his foot until he sat up.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Why do I find you sleeping here?"Abu Dharr replied, "Messenger of Allah, where else should I sleep? Do I have any home besides this?"He then mentioned the hadith in its full length.
أن أبا ذر كان يخدم النبي ﷺ، فإذا فرغ من خدمته آوى إلى المسجد، وكان هو بيته يضطجع فيه. فدخل رسول الله ﷺ ليلة فوجد أبا ذر منجدلا في المسجد فنكته رسول الله ﷺ برجله حتى استوى جالسا فقال له رسول الله ﷺ: ألا أراك نائما؟ قال أبو ذر يا رسول الله: فأين أنام وهل لي بيت غيره؟ فذكر الحديث بطوله.
This was narrated by Imam Ahmad (27588) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (1623), both from the route of Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram, who said, Shahr bin Hawshab narrated to us, saying, Asma bint Yazid narrated to me. He mentioned it at length, and it is recorded in full in its proper place. Its chain is hasan due to the disagreement over Shahr bin Hawshab, for some have declared him daif while others have deemed him trustworthy, though his hadith is hasan when nothing objectionable comes from him. See the statements of the scholars about him in the Book of Purification, under the chapter on the ears being part of the head.Tabarani also narrated it in Al-Awsat (7946) through another route, from Ismail bin Ayyash, from Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Husayn, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Abdul-Rahman bin Ghanm, from Abu Dharr, that he used to serve the Prophet ﷺ, and when he finished serving him he would come to the masjid and lie down in it. Abdul-Rahman bin Ghanm, with a fatha on the ghayn and a sakin on the nun, is among the trustworthy of the successors, though it has been said he had companionship with the Prophet. This chain also contains Ismail bin Ayyash, who is truthful when narrating from the people of his own region, the people of Syria, but confused when narrating from others, and Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Husayn Nawfali, who is from Makkah.Darimi also narrated it (1405) through another route, from Abu Harb bin Abu Aswad Duali, from his uncle, from Abu Dharr, who said, "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was sleeping in the masjid, and he struck me with his foot and said, 'Do I see you sleeping in it?' I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, my eyes overcame me.'" Its chain is sahih.
