A blind man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Pray to Allah to restore my sight."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "If you wish, I will pray for you, but if you wish, I will delay that, for it would be better."The man said, "Pray for me."So he instructed him to perform ablution properly and then make this supplication, "O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. I have turned through you to my Lord concerning this need of mine, that it may be granted to me. O Allah, accept his intercession on my behalf."
Tirmidhi (3578), Nasai in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (659), Ibn Majah (1358), and Ahmad (17240) all narrated it, and Ibn Khuzayma (1219) and Hakim (1/519) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through the route of Shuba, from Abu Jafar Madani, from Umara bin Khuzayma bin Thabit, from Uthman bin Hunayf, who related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Jafar Madani is Umayr bin Yazid bin Umayr Khatmi. There is disagreement about him, but the correct version is the hadith of Shuba, as Abu Zura said. This is discussed in Ilal Ibn Abu Hatim (2064).Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith, we do not know it except through this route, from the hadith of Abu Jafar, who is Khatmi." Ibn Majah said, "Abu Ishaq said, this is a sahih hadith." Hakim said, "This is a hadith with a sahih chain of transmission."His words, "And I turn to You through Your prophet Muhammad, the prophet of mercy," mean through the supplication of your prophet, as indicated by the beginning of the hadith. The Prophet ﷺ prayed for him and taught him this supplication, so his sight returned, and this is specific to the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ.His words, "O Allah, accept his intercession for me," mean accept the supplication of the Prophet ﷺ regarding this need of mine.On this topic there are also reports from Abdullah bin Abu Awfa, Ibn Abbas, Anas, and Abu Darda. As for the hadith of Ibn Abu Awfa, it was narrated by Tirmidhi (479) and Ibn Majah (1384), both through the route of Faid bin Abdul-Rahman, from Abdullah bin Abu Awfa, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever has a need before Allah, or before any of the sons of Adam, let him perform wudu and perform it thoroughly, then let him pray two units of prayer, then let him praise Allah and send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then let him say, 'There is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask You for the means of Your mercy, the certainty of Your forgiveness, gain from every good deed, and safety from every sin. Leave no sin of mine without forgiving it, no worry without relieving it, and no need pleasing to You without fulfilling it, O Most Merciful of the merciful.'" This wording is Tirmidhi's. Ibn Majah did not mention the words "O Most Merciful of the merciful," but he added at the end of the hadith, "Then let him ask Allah for whatever he wishes of the matters of this world and the next, for He is able to grant it."Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith, and there is criticism of its chain of transmission. Faid bin Abdul-Rahman is criticized as daif in hadith, and Faid is Abu Warqa." End of quote.I say, rather Faid bin Abdul-Rahman Kufi, Abu Warqa, is very daif. Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Discarded, accused of fabrication."As for what Hakim said in Mustadrak (1/320), "Faid bin Abdul-Rahman, Abu Warqa, was Kufan, counted among the generation following the Companions. I have seen a number of his descendants, and his hadith is sound, except that the two sheikhs [Bukhari and Muslim] did not narrate from him. I have only cited this hadith of his as a corroborating witness for what preceded."Meaning as a corroborating witness for the hadith of Ibn Abbas on the prayer of tasbih. But it is not as he said, and for this reason Dhahabi followed up on him, saying, "Rather, he is discarded."It has come in Tahdhib from Hakim himself that he said, "He narrated fabricated hadiths from Ibn Abu Awfa." Perhaps he overlooked this, and so his statement came out contradictory. In summary, Faid bin Abdul-Rahman is very daif, as I have said.As for the hadith of Ibn Abbas, it was narrated by Asbahani in Targhib (1280) through the route of Muhammad bin Zakariya Basri, our teacher Hakam bin Aslam narrated to us, our teacher Abu Bakr bin Ayyash narrated to us, from Abu Husayn, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Jibreel came with supplications and said, 'When a matter of this world befalls you, put these forward, then ask for your need. O Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, O Aid of those who cry for help, O Rescuer of those who seek rescue, O Remover of harm, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Answerer of the call of the distressed, O God of the worlds, to You I bring down my need, and You know best, so fulfill it.'"It contains Muhammad bin Zakariya, who is Ghalabi. Daraqutni said in Duafa wal-Matrukin (43), "He fabricates hadith."This hadith was mentioned by Munziri in Targhib wal-Tarhib (1030), who attributed it to Asbahani and said, "Its chain of transmission contains Ismail bin Ayyash, and it has many corroborating witnesses." I say, rather it is Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, and the criticism should focus on Muhammad bin Zakariya, which is more appropriate. As for the hadith of Anas bin Malik, it was also narrated by Asbahani (1278) from Ishaq bin Fayd, our teacher Madaa narrated to us, Abdul-Aziz narrated to me, from Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Ali, shall I not teach you a supplication for when distress or worry befalls you, which you say to your Lord, so that you are answered by Allah's permission and relieved of it. Perform wudu and pray two units of prayer, praise Allah and extol Him, send blessings upon your prophet, seek forgiveness for yourself and for the believing men and women, then say, 'O Allah, You judge between Your servants in what they used to differ over. There is no god but Allah, the Most High, the Mighty. There is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, Remover of grief, Reliever of worry, Answerer of the call of the distressed when they call upon You, the Most Merciful and Compassionate of this world and the next, have mercy on me in this need of mine by fulfilling it and bringing it success, a mercy through which You spare me from needing the mercy of anyone besides You.'"It contains men who are unknown, and Madaa is Ibn Jarud Daynuri. Ibn Abu Hatim said, quoting his father, "A sheikh from Daynur, not well known, his standing is truthfulness."Munziri mentioned it in Targhib wal-Tarhib (1278) and remained silent about it!Shawkani mentioned it in Fawaid Majmua (p. 55) and quoted from Lali Ibn Hajar's declaration that the chain of transmission of the hadith of Anas is daif, saying, "Tabarani narrated it, and its chain of transmission contains Abu Muamar Abbad bin Abdul-Samad, who is very daif." He said, "The hadith has another route from Anas in Musnad Firdaws, and its chain of transmission contains Abu Hashim, whose name is Kathir bin Abdullah, who is like Abu Muamar in weakness, or worse." End of his quotation from Lali.As for the hadith of Abu Darda, it was narrated by Imam Ahmad (27497) from Muhammad bin Bakr, who said, our teacher Maymun narrated to us, meaning Abu Muhammad Mirai Tamimi, who said, our teacher Yahya bin Abu Kathir narrated to us, from Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam, who said, I accompanied Abu Darda to learn from him. When death approached him, he said, "Inform the people of my death." So I informed the people of his death, and I came and found the house and everywhere around it full of people. I said, "I have informed the people of your death, and the house and everywhere around it are full." He said, "Take me out." So we took him out. He said, "Sit me up." So we sat him up. He said, "O people, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever performs wudu and does it thoroughly, then prays two units of prayer completing them fully, Allah will give him whatever he asked for, whether immediately or delayed.'" Abu Darda said, "O people, beware of turning around during prayer, for there is no prayer for one who turns around. If you are overcome in the voluntary prayer, do not let yourselves be overcome in the obligatory prayer."As for Maymun Abu Muhammad Mirai Tamimi, he is unknown. Uthman Darimi said to Yahya bin Main, "Maymun Abu Muhammad, a sheikh from whom Barsani (that is, Muhammad bin Bakr) narrates?" He said, "I do not know him." Ibn Adi said, after quoting this statement, "According to this, he would be unknown." And in Mizan, "It is not known whether he is Mirai."
