The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with the people to pray for rain. He led them in two cycles of prayer, reciting aloud in both. He turned his cloak inside out, raised his hands, supplicated and prayed for rain, and faced the qiblah.
أن رسول الله ﷺ خرج بالناس يستسقى، فصلى بهم ركعتين جهر بالقراءة فيهما وحول رداءه، ورفع يديه، فدعا واستسقى، واستقبل القبلة.
Abu Dawud (1161), Tirmidhi (556), Abdul-Razzaq (4889), and Ahmad (16437) all narrated it through the hadith of Mamar, from Zuhri, from Abbad bin Tamim, from his uncle, and he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." Ibn Abdul-Barr said in Tamhid (17/171), "The best of people in conveying this hadith was Mamar, from Zuhri."Based on this, the Shafiis and Malikis held that the prayer comes before the sermon, and this is the well-known position of Imam Ahmad. Ibn Abdul-Barr said, "The majority of jurists hold this view." The second report from Imam Ahmad is that he would deliver the sermon before the prayer, and this has been narrated from Umar, Anas, and Ayesha, and a group of the Followers held this view, and the hadiths that follow in the next chapter point to this.
