Someone who prayed the prayer of fear with the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Dhat ar-Riqa reported that one group lined up with him while another group stood facing the enemy. He prayed one rakah with those who were with him, then remained standing while they completed their prayer on their own. They then withdrew and took position facing the enemy, and the other group came forward. He prayed with them the remaining rakah, then remained seated while they completed their prayer on their own, after which he gave the closing salam with them.
Malik narrated it in "Prayer of Fear" (1) from Yazid bin Ruman, from Salih bin Khawat, from someone who prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he mentioned it.Bukhari narrated it in "Al-Maghazi" (4129) from Qutayba bin Saeed, and Muslim narrated it in "Prayer of the Traveler" (842) from Yahya bin Yahya, both of them from Malik with the same wording. As for his statement, "from someone who prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," is this person Sahl bin Abu Hathma, as in another narration found in Bukhari's "Al-Maghazi" (4131) and Muslim's "Prayer of the Traveler" (841), both through the route of Shuba, from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, from his father, from Salih bin Khawat bin Jubayr, from Sahl bin Abu Hathma, who mentioned it?Malik also narrated it in "Prayer of Fear" (2) from Yahya bin Saeed, from Qasim bin Muhammad, from Salih bin Khawat, that Sahl bin Abu Hathma told him that the prayer of fear is performed as follows. The imam stands with one group of his companions while another group faces the enemy. The imam performs one rakat and prostrates with those who are with him, then stands up. Once he is standing upright, he remains in place while they complete the remaining rakat on their own. Then they give the taslim and withdraw while the imam remains standing, taking up position facing the enemy. Then the others, who had not yet prayed, come forward and say the takbir behind the imam. He performs the rakat with them and prostrates, then gives the taslim. They then stand and perform the remaining rakat on their own, then give the taslim. End of narration, except that this version is mawquf.Tirmidhi said, "Yahya bin Saeed Ansari did not narrate it as marfu from Qasim bin Muhammad, and this is how the companions of Yahya bin Saeed Ansari narrated it, as mawquf. Shuba narrated it as marfu from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim bin Muhammad."Tirmidhi also relayed from Imam Ahmad, who said, "The prayer of fear has been narrated from the Prophet ﷺ in several forms, and I know of nothing sahih in this matter except this hadith. I choose the hadith of Sahl bin Abu Hathma." (2/454)Malik said, "The hadith of Qasim bin Muhammad, from Salih bin Khawat, is the most beloved to me of what I have heard concerning the prayer of fear."Ibn Abdul-Barr said, "The hadith of Sahl in Muwatta is mawquf according to a group of narrators from Malik, and a matter like this would not be stated merely as a personal opinion. It has indeed been narrated as marfu with a full chain."I say, it is as he said, for it has come in the Sahihayn and elsewhere as marfu with a full chain.
