Masruq reported,
We asked Abdullah bin Masud about this verse, "And do not think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision" [Al Imran 3:169].He replied, "We asked about that, and he said, 'Their souls are within green birds that have lanterns suspended from the Throne. They roam freely in Paradise wherever they wish, then return to those lanterns.'"He then mentioned the hadith in its full length.

Sahihعن مسروق قال
سألنا عبد الله بن مسعود عن هذه الآية {ولا تحسبن الذين قتلوا في سبيل الله أمواتا بل أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون} [آل عمران: ١٦٩]، فقال: أما إنا قد سألنا عن ذلك فقال: أرواحهم في جوف طير خضر، لها قناديل معلقة بالعرش تسرح من الجنة حيث شاءت، ثم تأوي إلى تلك القناديل فذكر الحديث بطوله.
Muslim narrated it in al-Imarah (1887) through several routes from Amash, from Abdullah bin Murrah, from Masruq, who related the hadith, and it will come in full in its proper place. As for his statement, "We asked about that," it appears that the one being asked was the Prophet ﷺ, and he omitted mentioning him because it was obvious who was meant, as Ibn Qayyim said in Tahzib Sunan (3/374).
