Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not perform qunut except when he was supplicating for or against a people.
أن النبي ﷺ كان لا يقنت إلا إذا دعا لقوم، أو على قوم.

Ibn Khuzayma (620) narrated it from Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Marzuq Bahili, who said, Muhammad bin Abdullah Ansari told us, Saeed bin Abu Aruba told us, from Qatada, from Anas, and he mentioned it.Khatib also reported it in his book Qunut, saying, Ubaydullah bin Abu Fath informed me, Muafa bin Zakariya told us, Muhammad bin Marzuq told us, Muhammad bin Abdullah Ansari told us, with his chain of transmission, similarly.Ibn Jawzi mentioned it in Tahqiq (2/431), and the author of Tanqih said, "This is a sahih chain of transmission, and the hadith is explicit that qunut is specific to calamities."
