The Prophet ﷺ performed qunut for a month after rising from rukuh in his prayer. When he said, "Allah hears whoever praises Him," he would say in his qunut, "O Allah, rescue Walid bin Walid. O Allah, rescue Salama bin Hisham. O Allah, rescue Ayyash bin Abu Rabia. O Allah, rescue the oppressed believers. O Allah, tighten Your grip upon Mudar. O Allah, make it for them years like the years of Yusuf."Abu Hurairah said, "Then I noticed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ later stopped this supplication, so I said, 'I see that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has stopped praying for them.'"It was said in reply, "Do you not see that they have already arrived?"
أن النبي ﷺ لقنت بعد الركعة في صلاته شهرا إذا قال: سمع الله لمن حمده يقول في قنوته: اللهم أنج الوليد بن الوليد، اللهم نج سلمة بن هشام، اللهم نج عياش بن أبي ربيعة، اللهم نج المستضعفين من المسلمين، اللهم أشدد وطأتك على مضر. اللهم اجعلها عليهم سنين كسني يوسف، قال أبو هريرة: ثم رأيت رسول الله ﷺ ترك الدعاء بعد فقلت: أرى رسول الله ﷺ قد ترك الدعاء لهم، قال: فقيل: وما تراهم قد قدموا؟
Muslim narrated it in "The Mosques" (295/675) through Walid bin Muslim, who said, Uzai reported to us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it as mentioned before.His words "they have arrived" mean that the supplication had been made for them so they might be delivered from the hands of the disbelievers, and they had indeed been delivered from them and had come to Madinah, so there was no longer any need to supplicate for them in that way. As for his supplication against the disbelievers, some of them had embraced Islam and some had died, so there was likewise no longer any need for it.Ibn Hibban (324/5), after narrating it through Walid bin Muslim with this chain, said, "In this report there is a clear indication that qunut is only recited in the prayers when some event occurs... so when such circumstances no longer exist, qunut is not recited. For the Chosen One ﷺ used to recite qunut against the polytheists and supplicate for the Muslims to be delivered. Then one day he stopped reciting qunut, and Abu Hurairah mentioned this, so the Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you not see that they have arrived?""
