The tribes of Ril, Zakwan, Usayyah, and Banu Lihyan asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for support against an enemy, so he sent seventy men from the Ansar to aid them. We used to call them the Reciters in their time. They would gather firewood by day and pray by night. When they reached the well of Mauna, the tribes killed them and betrayed them.When news reached the Prophet ﷺ, he performed the qunut for a month, supplicating during the dawn prayer against certain tribes of the Arabs, against Ril, Zakwan, Usayyah, and Banu Lihyan.Anas said, "We used to recite a verse of Quran concerning them, but it was later abrogated. It read, 'Convey to our people on our behalf that we have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and has pleased us.'"
أن رعلا وذكوان وعصية وبني لحيان استمدوا رسول الله ﷺ على عدو فأمدهم بسبعين من الأنصار، كنا نسميهم القراء في زمانهم كانوا يحتطبون بالنهار، ويصلون بالليل، حتى كانوا ببئر معونة، قتلوهم وغدروا بهم، فبلغ النبي ﷺ فقنت شهرا يدعو في الصبح على أحياء من أحياء العرب: على رغل وذكوان الفها ان لعلاج من بيته عملا لمصلين وعصية وبني لحيان. قال أنس: فقر أنا فيهم قرآنا، ثم إن ذلك رفع: بلغوا عنا قومنا أنا لقينا ربنا فرضي عنا وأرضانا.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapters on military expeditions (4090) from Abdul-Ala bin Hammad, who said, Yazid bin Zuray narrated to us, who said, Saeed narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas, and he mentioned it, with this wording being his. Muslim also narrated it in the chapters on mosques (677, 303-304) through another route from Qatada, from Anas, in abridged form.
