Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ invoked Allah against those who had killed his companions at the Well of Maunah for thirty mornings. He invoked Allah against the tribes of Rial, Lihyan, and Usayyah, who had disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.Anas said, "Allah revealed to His Prophet concerning those who killed his companions at the Well of Maunah a passage of Quran which we recited until it was later abrogated, 'Convey to our people that we have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and we are pleased with Him.'"
Malik narrated it from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha, from Anas bin Malik, who mentioned it. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Campaigns (4095) from Yahya bin Bukayr, and Muslim in the Book of Mosques (677) from Yahya bin Yahya, both of them from Malik, and the wording given here is Bukhari's. Muslim added "and Zakwan" after "Ril."In another narration with Bukhari (4091), from Musa bin Ismail, who said, Hammam told us, from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha, from Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ sent his uncle - a brother of Umm Salim - with seventy riders. The chief of the polytheists, Amir bin Tufayl, was given a choice between three things, and he said, "The people of the plains can be yours while the people of the towns are mine, or I will become your deputy, or I will raid you with the people of Ghatfan, a thousand and a thousand."Then Amir was struck down in the house of Umm so-and-so, and he said, "A swelling like the swelling of a young camel," in the house of a woman from the family of Banu so-and-so. "Bring me my horse," he said, and he died on the back of his horse. Then Haram, the brother of Umm Salim, set out - he was a lame man - along with a man from Banu so-and-so. He said, "Stay nearby until I go to them. If they grant me safety, you will be there, and if they kill me, go join your companions." He said to them, "Will you grant me safety, so that I may deliver the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" and he began speaking to them. They gestured to a man, who came at him from behind and stabbed him. Hammam said, "I think it was until he ran him through with the spear." He said, "Allah is greatest, I have triumphed, by the Lord of the Kaaba." Then the other man was overtaken, and they killed all of them except the lame man, who had been on top of a mountain. Then Allah revealed to us - and it was later among the abrogated verses - "We have indeed met our Lord, and He was pleased with us and pleased us."The Prophet ﷺ invoked against them for thirty mornings, against Ril, Zakwan, Banu Lihyan, and Usayyah, who disobeyed Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.So the Prophet ﷺ combined in his invocation Banu Lihyan and Banu Usayyah, who betrayed the companions of Asim bin Thabit, the commander of the expedition of Raji, along with Ril and Zakwan, who betrayed the seventy Quran-reciters and killed them at Bir Mauna, and that was because of how close together these two events occurred. In fact, Waqidi claimed that news of Bir Mauna and news of the companions of Raji reached the Prophet ﷺ on a single night, and that is why Anas bin Malik combined in the invocation the mention of Ril and Zakwan together with Usayyah and Banu Lihyan.
