Malik narrated it in "Prayer at Night" (15) from Abu Bakr bin Umar, from Saeed bin Yasar, with the same wording. Bukhari narrated it in "Witr" (999) from Ismail bin Abu Uways, and Muslim narrated it in "Prayer of the Traveler" (36/700) from Yahya bin Yahya, both of them from Malik, with the same wording. Abu Bakr bin Umar is Ibn Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Khattab.In another version, the Messenger of Allah would glorify Allah while riding, facing whichever direction he was heading, and would pray Witr on his mount, except that he would not pray the obligatory prayer on it. The wording is Bukhari's.Muslim narrated it (39) from Ibn Wahb, from Yunus, but did not mention in it the action of Ibn Umar. Bukhari also narrated it (1000) through another route, from Juwayria bin Asma, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, who said, the Prophet would not pray the obligatory prayers on his mount while traveling, but he would face whatever direction it turned toward, gesturing for the night prayer, except the obligatory prayers, and he would pray Witr on his mount.His statement, "he would pray Witr on his mount," is evidence for the majority that Witr is not obligatory, and this is why it was permissible to perform it while riding. Tahawi said, "It has been mentioned regarding the Kufans that Witr should not be prayed while riding, and this contradicts the established sunnah. Some of them have argued using the narration of Mujahid that he saw Ibn Umar dismount and pray Witr. But this does not contradict the fact that he prayed Witr while riding, since there is no dispute that praying on the ground is better. Abdul-Razzaq narrated through another route that Ibn Umar used to pray Witr on his mount, and sometimes he would dismount and pray Witr." End of quote. See Fath al-Bari (2/488–489).I say, this is how the hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah should be understood, despite a weakness in it. The Messenger of Allah used to pray while traveling in whatever direction his mount turned, but when he wanted to pray the obligatory prayer or Witr, he would make his mount kneel down and pray on the ground. Ibn Khuzayma narrated it (1263) from Yaqub Dawraqi, who said, Muhammad bin Musab told us, who said, Uzai told us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Thawban, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he mentioned it.Its chain is daif. Muhammad bin Musab Qarqasai, with two qafs, Nasai said of him, "daif," and Khatib said, "He made many errors because he narrated from memory," and Ibn Hibban said, "His memory became poor."Even granting the soundness of its chain, it can be said that it is possible he made his mount kneel and prayed Witr on the ground, since the Prophet did both actions, and this is among the permissible variations, especially since the reports of Ibn Umar regarding the Prophet's Witr while riding have more chains and are more firmly established and more sahih than the report of Jabir, as Ibn Khuzayma said.Similar in meaning is what was reported from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet used to pray Witr on his mount. Ibn Majah narrated it (1201) from Muhammad bin Yazid Ashfati, who said, Abu Dawud told us, who said, Abbad bin Mansur told us, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it. In it is Abbad bin Mansur, whom most of the scholars have graded daif, along with accusing him of tadlis.
