The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in spiritual retreat in the mosque when he heard the people reciting aloud. He drew back the curtain and said, "Each of you is in private conversation with his Lord, so let none of you disturb another, and let none of you raise his voice over another in recitation," or he said, "in prayer."
اعتكف رسول الله ﷺ في المسجد، فسمعهم يجهرون بالقراءة، فكشف الستر وقال: ألا إن كلكم مناج ربه، فلا يؤذين بعضكم بعضا، ولا يرفع بعضكم على بعض في القراءة أو قال: في الصلاة.
Abu Dawud (1332) narrated it from Hasan bin Ali, who said, "Abdul-Razzaq narrated to us, Maamar informed us, from Ismail bin Umaya, from Abu Salama, from Abu Saeed," and mentioned it, and its chain of transmission is sahih.The hadith is found in Musannaf Abdul-Razzaq (4216), and by this same route Imam Ahmad narrated it (11896). Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (1162), and so did Hakim (1/310-311), who said, "It meets the criteria of the two Shaykhs."
