I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "My mother left a bequest that a Raqaba be freed on her behalf, and I have a Nubian Jariya. Will it suffice for me to free her on her behalf?"He said, "Bring her to me."So I brought her to him, and he asked her, "Who is your Lord?"She replied, "Allah."He asked, "Who am I?"She replied, "You are the Messenger of Allah."He said, "Free her, for she is a believer."
Abu Dawud (3283) and Nasai (3653) both narrated it through the route of Hammad bin Salama, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama, from Sharid bin Suwayd, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Amr, for his hadith is hasan. As for Sharid bin Suwayd Thaqafi, there is no dispute about his companionship with the Prophet. However, Ibn Khuzayma narrated it in Tawhid (219) through another route, from Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqama, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, that Muhammad bin Sharid brought a black, non-Arabic-speaking female servant to the Messenger of Allah and said, "O Messenger of Allah, my mother pledged to free a believing slave. O Messenger of Allah, would it suffice for me to free this one?" The Messenger of Allah said to the servant, "Where is Allah?" She raised her head and said, "In the sky." He said, "Who am I?" She said, "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said, "Free her, for she is a believer."This made the hadith part of the narration of Muhammad bin Sharid, whose companionship with the Prophet is disputed. I think that "from his father" has been dropped from it.
