The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on a man who rises in the night to pray and wakes his wife, and if she refuses, sprinkles water on her face. May Allah have mercy on a woman who rises in the night to pray and wakes her husband, and if he refuses, sprinkles water on his face."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: رحم الله رجلا قام من الليل، فصلى وأيقظ امرأته، فإن أبت نضح في وجهها الماء، رحم الله امرأة قامت من الليل فصلت وأيقظت زوجها، فإن أبى نضحت في وجهه الماء.
Abu Dawud (1308), Nasai (1610), and Ibn Majah (1336) all narrated it through Yahya bin Saeed, from Muhammad bin Ajlan, who said, Qaqa bin Hakeem narrated to me, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it, with the wording identical in all of them. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ajlan, for he is truthful and his hadith is hasan. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (1148), and Ibn Hibban transmitted it from him (2567) and likewise graded it sahih, as did Hakim (1/309), all of them through Muhammad bin Ajlan. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." I say, it is as he said, for even though Muslim did narrate from Ibn Ajlan among the corroborating narrations, Hakim does not distinguish between corroborating narrations and primary ones, so take note of that.Nawawi said in al-Khulasa (1993), "Abu Dawud and others narrated it with a sahih chain." I say, rather it is hasan, as stated above.
