He spent a night at the home of Maymunah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who was his maternal aunt. He said, "I lay down across the width of the pillow, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his wife lay along its length. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept until midnight, or a little before or after it, when he woke up and sat wiping the sleep from his face with his hand. Then he recited the last ten verses of Surah Al Imran, beginning with the words of Allah Almighty, 'Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding' [Al Imran 3:190], until His statement, 'O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful' [Al Imran 3:200]."
أنه بات ليلة عند ميمونة زوج النبي ﷺ وهي خالته، قال: فاضطجعت في عرض الوسادة، واضطجع رسول الله ﷺ وأهله في طولها. فنام رسول الله ﷺ حتى إذا انتصف الليل، أو قبله بقليل أو بعده بقليل استيقظ رسول الله ﷺ فجلس يمسح النوم عن وجهه بيده ثم قرأ العشر الآيات الخواتم من سورة آل عمران وهي قوله تعالى: {إن في خلق السموات والأرض واختلاف اليل والنهار لآية لأولي الألبب}. إلى قوله تعالى: {يأيها الذين ءامنوا اصبروا وصابروا ورابطوا واتقوا الله لعلكم تفلحون} [سورة آل عمران: ١٩٠-٢٠٠.].
Malik narrated it in "Prayer at Night" (11) from Makhrama bin Sulayman, from Kurayb, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, with this wording, in a long hadith that will come later in the chapter on the number of night prayers. Bukhari narrated it in "Wudu" (183) from Ismail (who is Ibn Abu Uways), and Muslim narrated it in "Prayer of the Traveler" (763/182) from Yahya bin Yahya, both of them from Malik, with this wording.
