He saw Abu Rafi, the freed slave of the Prophet ﷺ, pass by Hasan bin Ali while Hasan was standing in prayer with his braided hair tucked into the back of his neck. Abu Rafi loosened it.Hasan turned toward him angrily.Abu Rafi said, "Attend to your prayer and do not be angry, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'That is the seat of Satan,' meaning the place where the braid is tucked."
Abu Dawud (646) and Tirmidhi (384) both narrated it via Abdul-Razzaq, and it is in his Musannaf (2991), from Ibn Jurayj, who said, "Imran bin Musa narrated to me, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi, from his father," and he related it. Tirmidhi said, Hasan. I say, it is as he said, for Imran bin Musa, who is the son of Amr bin Saeed bin As the Umawi, was narrated from by Ibn Jurayj and Ismail bin Ulaya. No one deemed him trustworthy except Ibn Hibban. That is why Hafiz said of him, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated, and he has indeed been corroborated, as will follow.By this same route, Ibn Khuzayma (911) also narrated it, and from him Ibn Hibban (2279), in their two Sahihs.Ibn Majah (1042) and Darimi (1386) narrated it by another route, from the hadith of Shuba, who said, "Makhwal informed me, saying, 'I heard Abu Saad, a man from the people of Madinah, say, "I saw Abu Rafi, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, see Hasan bin Ali while he was praying,"'" and he related the same, in brief, and the wording given is Ibn Majah's.Abu Saad al-Madani is Shurahbil bin Saad. Nasai criticized him, while others considered him acceptable. Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Truthful, but he became confused toward the end of his life," and the hadith of such a person is judged hasan when corroborated. Makhwal is Ibn Rashid Hannat, one of the narrators relied upon by the major hadith compilers. This corroboration strengthens what came before. As for Darimi, he narrated it from the hadith of Shuba, from Makhwal, from Abu Saeed, from Abu Rafi, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me while I was prostrating, having tied up my hair" or he said, "knotted it, so he undid it." End.
