Abu Dawud narrated it (637) from Zayd bin Akhzam, who said, Abu Dawud narrated to us, from Abu Awana, from Asim, from Abu Uthman, from Ibn Masud, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is sahih. Abu Dawud here is Tayalisi, who narrated it in his Musnad (349) from Abu Awana and Thabit Abu Zayd. He said, "Abu Awana raised it, but Thabit did not raise it, and it contains a story, which is that he saw a Bedouin wearing a cloak that he had let trail while he was praying, so he said to him, 'The one who drags his garment out of pride during prayer is not excused by Allah, whether in what is permissible or forbidden.'"Abu Dawud, the author of the Sunan, also found fault with it, saying, "A group narrated this from Asim as stopped at Ibn Masud, among them Hammad bin Salama, Hammad bin Zayd, Abu Ahwas, and Abu Muawiya."I say, Abu Awana is Wadah bin Abdullah Yashkuri, well known by his kunya. He alone raised the hadith, and he is "trustworthy, firmly reliable," as stated in Taqrib. Abu Dawud, the author of the Sunan, relied on him, as did Bazzar (1884), and Nasai in Sunan al-Kubra, and others, all of whom narrated it through his transmission. Therefore this addition must be accepted, as is well known in the science of hadith defects, especially since something like this could not be said merely on the basis of personal opinion. It is also supported by the hadiths that prohibit letting the lower garment trail altogether, which will come later in the Book of Clothing. For how could someone let his garment trail while standing in prayer before Allah , a state that demands humility and submission?
