The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade praying in a single sheet without wrapping part of it over the shoulder, and he also forbade praying in trousers without an upper garment.
نهى رسول الله ﷺ أن يصلى في لحاف لا يتوشح به، والآخر أن تصلي في سراويل وليس عليك رداء.
Abu Dawud (636) reported it, saying, Muhammad bin Yahya Dhuhli told us, Saeed bin Muhammad told us, Abu Tumayla told us, Abu Muneeb Ubaydullah Ataki told us, from Abdullah bin Burayda, and he related it as mentioned. Its chain is hasan because of Abu Muneeb Ubaydullah Ataki. Hakim (1/250) graded it sahih, reporting it through the route of Abu Tumayla Yahya bin Wadih with the same wording. He said, "It is sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), though they did not include it. They both relied on Abu Tumayla as evidence. As for Abu Muneeb Marwazi, he is Ubaydullah bin Ataki, one of the trustworthy narrators of the people of Marw, whose hadith is gathered among the Khurasanis."I say, this is not as he claimed. Abu Muneeb Ubaydullah bin Abdullah Ataki Marwazi is not among the narrators of the two Shaykhs. Rather, only Abu Dawud, Nasai, and Ibn Majah reported from him. Bukhari criticized him and included him among the "Weak Narrators," saying, Abu Hatim said, "He is decent enough to be moved out of the book of weak narrators." Nasai deemed him trustworthy, and Abu Dawud said, "There is no harm in him."Ibn Abdul-Barr, in Tamhid (6/374), deemed this hadith daif due to a weakness in it, which I believe he intended to attribute to "Abu Muneeb," and because it conflicted with the earlier hadiths. He then said, "Even if it were sahih, its meaning would be a recommendation for one who is able."I say, as for the weakening of Abu Muneeb, it is refuted by what I have mentioned. As for its conflicting with the sahih hadiths, that is not correct, since there are supporting narrations bearing the same meaning, as previously shown. His statement that one should pray in trousers without an upper wrap carries the same meaning as the hadith of Abu Hurairah, "There is nothing on his shoulders," for it is part of the sunnah to pray in a waist-wrap and an upper wrap when one has both available, as was previously quoted from Baghawi. The hadith of Burayda supports what Baghawi said. As for his statement, "Even if it were sahih, its meaning would be a recommendation for one who is able," this is a sound and well-directed remark.
