The Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded the prayer after only two units.Dhul-Yadayn said to him, "Has the prayer been shortened, or did you forget, Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Is Dhul-Yadayn telling the truth?"The people answered, "Yes."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and prayed the remaining two units, then gave the closing salutation. He then said the takbir and prostrated like his usual prostration or longer, then raised his head. He said the takbir again and prostrated like his usual prostration or longer, then raised his head.
Malik narrated it in the book of Prayer (58) from Ayub bin Abu Tamima Sakhtiyani, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned something similar.Bukhari narrated it in the book of adhan (714) from Abdullah bin Maslama, and in the book of Forgetfulness (1228) from Abdullah bin Yusuf, both of them from Malik, with the same chain and similar wording.Muslim narrated it in the book of Masjids (573) through several routes from Ayub with the same chain, and in it, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the two afternoon prayers, either Dhuhr or Asr. He gave the salam after two rakahs, then went to a palm trunk at the front of the masjid and leaned against it, looking angry. Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, but they were too awed to speak. Some of the people hurried out and said, 'The prayer has been shortened.' Then Dhul-Yadayn stood up," and he mentioned something similar.Bukhari narrated it (1229) through the route of Yazid bin Ibrahim, from Muhammad bin Sirin, with the same chain and similar wording.Malik also narrated it (59) from Dawud bin Husayn, from Abu Sufyan, the freed slave of Ibn Abu Ahmad, who said, "I heard Abu Hurairah say," and he mentioned something similar. In it, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed what remained of the prayer, then he prostrated twice after the salam, while sitting."Muslim narrated it in the book of Masjids (573/99) from Qutayba bin Saeed, from Malik, with the same chain and similar wording.Bukhari narrated it in the book of Prayer (482) through another route, from Ibn Awn, from Ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the two afternoon prayers." Ibn Sirin said, "Abu Hurairah named it, but I have forgotten." He said, "He led us in two rakahs, then gave the salam, then stood up and went to a piece of wood placed across the masjid, and leaned against it as if he were angry. He placed his right hand over his left, interlaced his fingers, and placed his right cheek on the back of his left palm. Those in a hurry went out through the doors of the masjid," and he mentioned the rest of the hadith in the same way.In it, after his words "then he gave the salam," it adds, "Then he said the takbir and prostrated as he usually prostrated or longer, then raised his head and said the takbir, then said the takbir again and prostrated as he usually prostrated or longer, then raised his head and said the takbir." Sometimes they would ask him, "Then did he give the salam?" and he would say, "I was informed that Imran bin Husayn said, 'Then he gave the salam.'"That is, the salam after the two prostrations of forgetfulness was not mentioned in the hadith of Abu Hurairah, but it was mentioned in the hadith of Imran, as will come later. The hadith of Abu Hurairah was also narrated by Tirmidhi (394) through the route of Hushaym, from Hisham bin Hassan, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from him, with the wording, "The Prophet ﷺ performed the two prostrations after the salam."The hadith of Dhul-Yadayn was also narrated by Imran bin Husayn and Abdullah bin Umar, as will come later. The name of Dhul-Yadayn was Khirbaq.
