The Prophet ﷺ said, "Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer, between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer." Then he said the third time, "For whoever wishes."
قال النبي ﷺ: بين كل أذانين صلاة، بين كل أذانين صلاة ثم قال في الثالثة: لمن شاء.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Adhan (627), and Muslim in the Book of the Prayer of Travelers (838), both of them through the route of Kahmas bin Hasan, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from Abdullah bin Mughafal, and he related it. The wording given is that of Bukhari, while Muslim's wording is, "Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer," saying it three times, and in the third time he said, "For whoever wishes."Bukhari also related it (624), and Muslim (838), both of them through the route of Jareeri, from Abdullah bin Burayda, with the same chain, saying, "Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer, three times, for whoever wishes." This is the wording of Bukhari, while Muslim did not give its wording in full but referred back to the hadith of Kahmas mentioned just before it, saying, "Like it, except that he said, in the fourth time, 'For whoever wishes.'"So what Muslim mentioned is open to more than one interpretation, as will be seen in the hadith that follows.
